About the workshop
Increasingly frequent and severe storm events underscore the need for proactive, data driven resiliency planning. This workshop and presentation address the challenge of preparing for both anticipated and unforeseen impacts by emphasizing investments made before disasters to improved structural, social, and economic outcomes. The session focuses on building local resiliency through strategic planning and data development that helps cities, towns, and counties (jurisdictions) identify assets at risk, enhance preparedness, understand costs and funding options, engage stakeholders, and translate plans into implementable projects. Examples from state, county, and municipal efforts illustrate practical approaches to resiliency planning and implementation.
A central theme is the role of floodplain and geospatial data in shaping decisions across disciplines. Participants will examine how job specific needs influence how data are created, structured, shared, and interpreted. The workshop explores current floodplain mapping requirements, the inherent contradictions within datasets that are simultaneously “correct” and “wrong” for different uses, and the challenges of fitting complex data into rigid frameworks. Emphasis is placed on coordinating data creation with future uses in mind, developing shared standards, and understanding the implications of data across disciplines. Attendees will leave better equipped to navigate local, state, and federal data sources, collaborate with key partners, and support more effective, resilient floodplain management.
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Explain how role specific decisions across disciplines influence the creation, structure, and interpretation of floodplain and resiliency‑related data processes.
  • Identify key partners, networks, and processes necessary to support coordinated data development and resilient floodplain management.
  • Collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders to develop shared data standards, requirements, and coordination strategies.
  • Identify and reconcile challenges, gaps, and contradictions within current floodplain mapping data and requirements.
  • Locate and navigate relevant local, state, and federal floodplain datasets and understand their appropriate uses and limitations.
  • Evaluate how data created for one purpose affects other disciplines and apply strategies to make data more meaningful, accessible, and actionable.
